The Many Golf Clubs and Their Functions

Table of Contents

Are you just starting to play golf? It may be a daunting task learning about golf. There are a lot of pieces of equipment you have to familiarize yourself with. One of the most important things you need to know is the many golf clubs and their functions.

The Driver: Drivers are usually used on tee shots and long fairway shots. It has the lowest loft (angle) and the longest shaft, which allows for the greatest distance. Drivers come in a variety of lengths and heads (the main part of the golf club) to fit all types of players. Some different types of drivers are the standard driver, adjustable driver, and oversized drivers. As a beginner, using a standard driver is a good place to start. You can always adjust the length and head to fit your needs as you progress in your golf game.

The Fairway Woods: Fairway woods are used for shots from the fairway. They have larger heads than irons and less loft, which makes them easier to hit off of the ground. The larger heads are how you can distinguish them from irons. Typically, 3-wood and 5-wood are the most common clubs used in a set.

The Irons: Irons are more versatile than other clubs and can be used for a variety of shots, from tee shots to approach shots and even bunker shots. They have shorter shafts and higher loft angles that help you to control your shot better. They range from 2-9 irons and come in a variety of different shaft lengths.

Hybrid Clubs: These days, hybrid clubs come in a variety of lofts and shaft lengths. They are designed to replace hard-to-hit long irons for a more consistent and easier shot. Hybrids will typically have an iron-like head shape, but with a larger clubface; this is what makes them easier to hit than long irons.

The Wedges: Wedges are designed for short-distance precision shots, such as from the sand or rough. They have higher lofts than other clubs and shorter shafts to help you control your shot. They come in several varieties, including pitching wedges, sand wedges, lob wedges and gap wedges. Typically a pitching wedge and a sand wedge is what is found as standard in a typical golf bag.

The Putter: The putter is used to make short, delicate strokes on the green to get the ball into the hole. Putters usually have a flat or slightly curved face and a short shaft with no loft. These clubs are designed to make accurate, low-power strokes on the green. Putters are used to finish your drive and aim for the hole.

Knowing your different clubs and their uses is essential for any golfer. Take the time to practice and get familiar with the different types of clubs. Rent a set of clubs to see what works best for you, and don’t be afraid to ask a golf pro or fellow golfer for advice. Working out the right clubs for each situation will help you improve your game and make it more enjoyable. In no time, you will be able to make a trip out to the Florida golf resorts to try your hand at some professional courses.
